The Next Evolution of Our Company Values

A lot has changed at Alto since Matt and I first set out to transform the pharmacy experience back in 2015. (For one thing, we no longer work out of a storage closet.) In the past two years alone, we’ve quadrupled our team to more than 1,000 Altoids and opened new locations in Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, New York City, Houston, Dallas, San Jose and San Diego.

Our mission — improving the quality of life for everyone who needs medicine — will never change, but a team of 1,000 needs a different recipe for success than one of 100. And as our team continues to grow, along with our geographic footprint, we’ve revisited our core values so that we can move forward with intention and clarity during this next phase of Alto’s journey.

Here are the values that guide our work today.

This was at the top of our founding values, and it’s still here. In fact, our resolve to put patients first has only gotten stronger — not because it’s what is best for the business, but because it is our only reason for being in business. Each member of our team strives to build a world where healthcare companies truly prioritize the needs of their patients, and we’ll do everything in our power to make that a reality.

My personal favorite of all our new values, dancing in the storm is about embracing the bumps in the road — and there are many when you’re taking on challenges within healthcare — and recognizing that you can always choose joy. We strive to help our teammates do the same by infusing a little bit of levity and laughter into the workday. It only takes one person to start a dance party!

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Nor is it the absence of strong opinions, but the willingness to learn and change our minds. Sometimes our ego takes over — that’s only human. But we try to be mindful of it, and willing to let go of our ego and instead put our mission, customers, and teammates ahead of ourselves.

We view ourselves as creators of our circumstances, responsible for our actions and our own well-being. When we don’t like an outcome, we don’t project blame onto others or ourselves, but rather take radical responsibility for how we created the situation. More than any other value, this is an opportunity for deep internal reflection, and by practicing it consistently, we can maximize our own individual growth.

We say what is true for us in the moment, even when it is uncomfortable. We support our teammates to do the same by recognizing the validity of their experience and not taking it personally. Leading with candor isn’t always easy, but it feels much better to live authentically and honestly and to work with others who do as well. Candor doesn't have to be angry or hurtful - it can be kind and binding, compassionate and respectful.

It’s easy to become paralyzed by fear, overwhelmed by all of the possibilities in a complex situation. So unless a decision involves customer or employee safety, we don’t wait for perfect information. We trust our intuition and common sense and simply forge ahead, knowing that mistakes are in fact one of the best ways to learn.

There are no shortcuts or silver bullets in an industry as complex as healthcare. The way to achieve transformational change is through continuous improvement over a long period of time. When we’re overwhelmed by the magnitude of what we’re trying to accomplish, we remember that what each of us does adds up — one step at a time, one customer at a time — and that with small but steady progress we can accomplish great feats.

As a company grows, issues no longer affect a few customers, but a few thousand. It’s tempting to only look at trends and aggregates, but we know this is a trap. Greater distance from individual examples creates more opportunity for misunderstanding, bias, and incorrect assumptions. So we look beyond surface-level data and dive deep into the details. Only then can we fully understand an issue to its core.

Values themselves are just words, and the words themselves are not that important. What’s important is how we live them day in and day out, and the culture they support. In the months ahead, we’ll continue to integrate these values into the fabric of our company processes, our products, our customers’ experiences, and our work lives. And this work is not something just a few leaders or HR team members do - every Altoid has a hand in bringing these values to life and co-creating our culture.

Hims & Hers, the direct-to-consumer digital health company, has partnered with Alto Pharmacy to offer free, same-day courier medication delivery for customers accessing primary care services through its growing telehealth platform. 

Patients using the Hims & Hers platform to access primary care services in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County, Seattle, Las Vegas and Denver-Boulder communities will have the option to select Alto as their preferred pharmacy for prescription delivery. Prescriptions for patients selecting Alto will flow automatically to Alto for fulfillment, and patients can use the Alto app to select their preferred date and time for free home delivery, review copay and medication info, and message a pharmacist with any questions.

Delivering the Best Care

Jaime Tolbert is a Patient Care Pharmacist based out of Alto’s Denver office. Here she shares what drew her to Alto and how the company is fulfilling its mission to be a better pharmacy. 

Prior to Alto, I worked in retail pharmacy for 13 years. My patients were the best part of my practice and helping them live healthier and happier lives was very fulfilling. When our company was bought out by CVS, there was a shift from caring about people and their health to a very task based environment. Spending the majority of my day on administrative work, being timed to finish each task, and not having time to really engage with my patients was devastating to me as a health care professional, and my work became less meaningful. One of my former colleagues had taken a position at Alto and shared how much she loved the company and its values. She offered to introduce me around and show me first hand what it was like to work here. I found that Alto puts their patients above all, and really cares about both the people they serve, and their employees. They are open to new ideas and changes, and really listen when you have thoughts and ideas about how to better serve our community or improve processes. 

Coming to Alto meant leaving behind my “family” of patients whom I loved and had worked with for years. Although this was a difficult decision, it is one I would make again in a heartbeat. This company is making a real change in pharmacy and in healthcare. After 6 months, I can honestly say I love to come to work, and I am so thankful every day for the opportunity to be part of something that is changing the face of healthcare. (And, as Alto expands our services in Denver, I am hopeful to bring many of those wonderful people to our company and offer them the personalized care they deserve.)

Working for Alto has brought me back to the reason that I became a pharmacist…to help people and to make a difference. My primary role is to focus on our patients- making sure they understand their medications, have a resource for information to answer all of their questions, and to give them the care that they deserve while keeping them safe from drug interactions or other medical issues. 

As patient care pharmacists, we are problem solvers, detectives, drug information resources, and caring providers of health and wellness to our patients. Regardless of what we do, we want to make sure we are acting in the best interest of the patient. There are instances in which people call in late at night with medication issues such as: their fertility medication has not been stored correctly and they need their injection right away, or their injection did not go as expected and they don’t know how to proceed. In these moments, we have to do some detective work and figure out if the drug is OK to use or not, or make judgement calls on the best course of action for these patients. It can be difficult to remain calm when patients are panicked or confused, but it’s our job to be a voice of reason, a sense of calm in the storm for the patient.

In the 13 years I spent in retail pharmacy, I wasn’t able to go nearly as in-depth with patient care as I do at Alto. In the retail setting, you perform all aspects of the job from start to finish mostly on your own, often within a strict time limit. At Alto, the company has separated the pharmacist role into two teams: a production team and a patient care team. The production pharmacists get to focus solely on medication preparation and inventory management while the patient care pharmacists can focus on patient consultations and clinical recommendations.

We definitely still try to work efficiently, but we have the luxury to take a 30-45 minute phone call to consult our patients and comfort them, if necessary. Some of the medications that we administer, like our fertility meds, can be really overwhelming. We have the benefit of taking time to walk patients through tough moments like their first injection, which is especially helpful on evenings and weekends when their doctor isn’t available.

Unlike the retail setting, all of Alto’s patient care interactions are done through phone calls or secure message via our app. This model presents a lot of benefits including more privacy for the patient/pharmacist conversation.  Another benefit is the ability to reference those dialogues with the pharmacy in the event, for example, the patient forgets how the pharmacist advised to take the medication. The model also forces our team to really focus on every aspect of our messaging. We work hard to tailor both how we speak to patients and how we draft messages to ensure our patients feel a strong sense of empathy and can understand their instructions clearly. Our team also shares one voice. If a patient speaks with me about their defective medication on Tuesday, and that patient is then put in touch with one of my colleagues the following Wednesday, they will receive the same quality care and same customer service, and my colleague will have all of their most current information in detailed notes. 

Another unique factor about Alto is the team dynamic. There are 20 patient care pharmacists between the Denver and San Francisco offices. Working alongside other pharmacists every day, I’ve been able to learn so much about pharmacy that I didn’t know before. In a retail setting you're the lone individual making decisions and calls based on your interpretation of a situation.  Now, I have this entire team with varying perspectives to bounce ideas off of or go to for advice if something comes up that I have never dealt with before.

Our supervisors at Alto are also very skilled in identifying their employees’ strengths and inviting them to work on new projects. I really enjoy explaining things to people, so I’ve helped to re-write the training program for our patient care pharmacists; everything from surveys of how my team thinks we should train, to the training schedule, to physical training guides to help develop our new PCPs. That’s an opportunity I never would have had in traditional retail and I am grateful for the opportunity to help expand and train our team. I feel like working as a team is a great way to grow as a pharmacist, and ultimately benefits our patients which is why we are here.

Delivering the Best Care: Why a Veteran Pharmacist Chose to Join the Alto Team 

When the city of Denver instituted a shelter-in-place order, the non-profit A Precious Child (APC), based in Broomfield, CO, suddenly saw both a dramatic decrease in donations and an increase in people in need. With COVID-19, APC found that many children and families were still in dire need of donations of cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and more, but it was much harder for APC to collect and distribute these goods. The Alto team in Denver started a food and clothing drive to help support APC's efforts and is offering free delivery of donations to people in need.

Matt Alley, Sr. Manager of Operations at Alto Pharmacy in Denver, had previously been a volunteer at A Precious Child and received a message from APC as they were looking for organizations to help support their efforts. We caught up with Matt to hear more about Alto's commitment to the Denver community.

Q: Can you share how the Denver Alto team got involved in efforts to support A Precious Child?

When the shelter in place started in Denver, I had a few non-profits reach out to me as many of them were really impacted by this and looking for ways to ensure they could help people in need. I had volunteered with A Precious Child before and believe they are doing great work to support children in the area.  

I immediately wanted to find a way that I could support them, but also knew that many of my Alto coworkers had been talking about how they could help give back to the community during this time. We spoke with A Precious Child to hear what they needed help with and our team decided to hold a food and clothing drive to help collect donations for A Precious Child.

We all focused on reaching out to our own networks to ask for donations that we collected at the Alto office and then delivered to A Precious Child for them to distribute to families in need.

At our core we are a community pharmacy. This is just what we do. That’s why this is so important to me.

Q: How do you anticipate this partnership with A Precious Child may adapt as Denver ends its shelter in place?

The shelter in place order definitely had an immediate impact on A Precious Child’s donations since more people were staying home. They normally have individuals drop off donations in person, but that doesn’t work during shelter in place, so they were exploring ways to aggregate collections and have them delivered in bulk. A Precious Child created a wish list of things that they needed to get to families such as hygiene, cleaning and baby essentials. Our team worked to get these goods and then our Alto delivery couriers helped drop these off in a safe way to the donation center.

Looking forward, we have identified that the way we can best help out A Precious Child is to have Alto couriers provide safe, no contact delivery of donations to families in need. Since Alto has continued to serve the community and help get deliveries of medications to people, even during shelter in place, we already have great processes in place to keep both the delivery courier and the person receiving a delivery of medications or donations safe.  

We are going to be partnering with A Precious Child in an ongoing capacity to offer free delivery service of donations to families in need across eight counties in the Denver area each Friday. 

I am grateful that the Alto leadership has been so supportive of our team’s efforts to give back to the community. We are in such a crazy new reality with COVID-19, and it feels really good to be able to contribute and give back. I know it’s been motivating for everyone here on the Denver Alto team to be able to give back to the community both through our own work at Alto and through this partnership.

Now, more than ever, I think Alto’s services and free doorstep delivery of medications will help keep the community healthy and safe.

Starting Wednesday, April 15, residents of the Seattle metro area can now choose Alto’s same-day doorstep delivery for their pharmacy needs.
