Resources for Affording HIV Medication

The HIV treatment and prevention landscape continues to evolve, with many effective medications. Antiretroviral therapy (ART), the frontline treatment for HIV since 1997, is a combination of medications that lower the amount of HIV in your bloodstream. When taken as prescribed every day, ART can help individuals with HIV achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load. As a result, more than half of all those living with HIV in the U.S. are not at risk of transmitting the virus to others.

On the prevention front, PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, can lower risk of sexual transmission of HIV by 99% when taken daily and reduces the risk of getting HIV from intravenous drug use by about 74%.

For many individuals, cost is a barrier to both starting and continuing to take ART and PrEP as prescribed. Fortunately, HIV prevention medication and treatment continue to become more accessible, with generic PrEP options and expanded health insurance coverage of PrEP and ART. In addition, the following resources, including patient assistance programs and copay savings cards from medication manufacturers, can help reduce the cost of HIV treatment and prevention medication.

Many pharmaceutical companies have patient assistance programs (PAPs) to offset the cost of prescription medications for individuals without insurance or with insufficient insurance coverage. Copay savings cards from pharmaceutical manufacturers can help offset the cost of prescription medications for individuals with insurance. Your heart’s ability to pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body depends on the functioning of many different structural components. The heart’s four valves allow blood to flow through your heart in the right direction. When they don’t open or close properly, the flow of blood throughout your body is disrupted.

Understanding Heart Valve Disease

Heart valve disease refers to several conditions in which one or more of your heart valves doesn’t function properly. Without treatment, heart valve disease can potentially lead to other heart health issues, but it can be managed with heart medications, lifestyle changes, and, in more severe cases, surgical procedures. Here’s what to know about recognizing and treating heart valve disease.

Your heart has four chambers: the two upper chambers, or atria, which receive blood, and the two lower chambers, or ventricles, which pump blood. Each time blood leaves or enters one of these chambers, it passes through one of the heart’s four valves:

The mitral valve, located between the left atrium and left ventricle

The tricuspid valve, located between the right atrium and right ventricle

The aortic valve, located between the left ventricle and the aorta, the heart’s main artery to the body

The pulmonic valve, located between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, which transports blood without oxygen from the heart to the lungs

Each valve has flaps that open and close with every heartbeat. The tricuspid, aortic, and pulmonary valves all have three flaps, and the mitral valve has two. Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of the valves doesn’t open or close, affecting blood flow. These conditions typically develop from one of two main issues with heart valves: regurgitation and stenosis.

Regurgitation refers to leakage of a heart valve. When a heart valve doesn’t shut completely, blood flows backwards. This reduces forward blood flow, causing the heart to fill with too much blood.

Stenosis refers to the narrowing of a heart valve, which constrains blood flow out of the ventricles. This causes the heart to pump blood more forcefully in order to get blood to pass through the stiff, or stenotic, valve.

Regurgitation and stenosis are not mutually exclusive; one valve can develop both issues at the same time. An individual with a heart valve disease may also have issues with more than one heart valve.

All types of heart valve disease cause the heart to work harder to pump blood. Since heart valve issues can significantly disrupt blood flow, these disorders can lead to other heart health issues without effective treatment. Heart valve disease is a contributing factor in many cases of heart failure, and it can also cause strokes, blood clots, or abnormal heart rhythms.

There are several factors involved in the development of heart disease, including the following.

A history of other heart health issues, including other types of heart disease or a history of one or more heart attacks

A history of other health conditions linked to heart valve problems, including infective endocarditis and rheumatic fever

Heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes

Aging may also play a role in the development of heart valve disease, as the heart valves — particularly the mitral valve — can degenerate slowly over time. In addition, aging can cause calcium to accumulate on the heart valves, most commonly the aortic valve, leading to aortic stenosis.

Some types of heart valve conditions are the result of congenital heart defects, meaning they are present at birth, including the following:

The severity of heart valve disease can vary significantly by individual. Some individuals may live with a heart valve condition for many years before experiencing any symptoms, and more mild cases may never cause any symptoms at all. When symptoms of heart valve disease are present, they often include the following.

An irregular heartbeat and/or heart palpitations

Low or high blood pressure, depending on the specific heart valve condition

Treatment of heart valve disease varies by individual, as there are many types of heart valve conditions and a wide spectrum of severity.

Some mild to moderate cases of heart valve disease may not initially require treatment; your doctor may want to observe the heart valve issue for a period of time. Other cases of mild to moderate symptoms may be successfully managed with medications. Medications commonly used to relieve symptoms of heart valve disease include:

Heart rate controlling medications such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and digoxin (Digox®, Lanoxin®, and Digitek®)

Blood pressure medications such as diuretics — which lower blood pressure by removing excess sodium and water — and vasodilators, which relax the muscles in the walls of blood vessels to improve blood flow

Some individuals with a heart valve condition may need surgery. There are different types of procedures that may be used, including heart valve repair surgery or heart valve replacement surgery. Sometimes a less invasive procedure called a balloon valvuloplasty is used for various types of heart valve stenosis.

The importance of a heart-healthy lifestyle

Not all types of heart valve issues are preventable, but some are. By managing your heart disease risk factors, you can lower your risk for heart health issues later in life, including heart valve disease.

Regular exercise can help you maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. The American Heart Association suggests aiming for about 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity.

As you plan a heart-healthy diet, load up on foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fats. The AHA also recommends capping your sodium intake at 1,500 mg/day, as high sodium levels can raise your blood pressure. In general, processed or prepackaged foods like soups, cold cuts, bread, and frozen meals are high in sodium.

There are more than 25 million individuals in the U.S. living with asthma, including more than 5 million children. While most asthma cases involve the same common symptoms — shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing — day-to-day life with the condition can vary significantly from one person to another. Not only is there a wide spectrum of the severity and frequency of symptoms, but there are also different types of asthma with distinct causes and triggers. (They are not mutually exclusive, so it’s possible to fulfill the diagnostic criteria for more than one type of asthma.) Here’s what to know about the main types of asthma, including important treatment considerations.

Understanding the Different Types of Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition in which the airways in your lungs become narrow and inflamed, often leading to difficulty breathing. There are several different types of asthma: allergic asthma, non-allergic asthma, nocturnal asthma, occupational asthma, cough-variant asthma, and a related condition called exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. While there is variation among these asthma types with respect to causes, triggers, and treatment options, there are also some similarities, including the core symptoms of asthma such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, and shortness of breath.

Some people with asthma experience intermittent flare-ups while others have symptoms the majority of the time, or persistent asthma. Persistent asthma can be categorized further as mild persistent, moderate persistent, or severe persistent depending on the severity of symptoms.

Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, accounting for about 60% of all asthma cases in the U.S. It occurs when an individual’s immune system interprets substances such as household dust mites, pet dander, or pollen as harmful and releases antibodies that ultimately lead to inflammation in the airways. Allergic asthma frequently involves allergy symptoms like nasal congestion, a runny nose, and itching in the eyes, nose, or ears in addition to core asthma symptoms. There is often a genetic component.

10-33% of all individuals with asthma experience symptoms caused by triggers other than allergies including a history of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, respiratory infections, pollution, cold weather, humidity, and exercise. This is referred to as non-allergic asthma. It often develops later in life in comparison to allergic asthma. As part of the diagnosis process, your healthcare provider will rule out allergies as the cause of your asthma symptoms.

60% of all individuals with persistent asthma also experience nocturnal asthma, a type of asthma in which symptoms worsen at night. Those with nocturnal asthma frequently have their sleep interrupted as a result of coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness. There are many factors involved in the development of nocturnal asthma including smoking; dust or other allergens; and other illnesses or health conditions such as the cold, flu, sinusitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and sleep apnea. Your circadian rhythm and nightly fluctuations in the hormones epinephrine and histamine are also believed to play a role.

Since your daytime breathing can’t be used to diagnose nocturnal asthma, your doctor may ask you to test your breathing at home or participate in a sleep study to confirm a diagnosis.

Occupational asthma occurs when you are exposed to chemicals in your work environment that affect your respiratory function and breathing such as paint, cleaning products, mold, fungi, or dust. 11 million individuals in the U.S. are exposed to an occupational asthma-linked substance at their workplace. Workers who may have a higher risk for occupational asthma include bakers, farmers, metal and plastics workers, woodworkers, and those who work in manufacturing.

As many as 90% of individuals with asthma experience respiratory symptoms during physical activity — a subcategory of asthma known as exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Exposure to airborne irritants including smoke, pollution, and pollen and/or to cold, dry air may contribute to symptoms.

There is much variation in individual experiences of EIB symptoms. Some individuals begin to have difficulty breathing right when they start exercising while others have more noticeable symptoms shortly after they return to a state of rest. Symptoms quickly disappear in some cases but last up to 24 hours in others.

If you have symptoms of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, it’s important to stay active. Rather than avoiding exercise to prevent an asthma flare-up, speak with your healthcare provider about your asthma treatment plan and look for forms of exercise with an appropriate level of intensity.

In some cases, a dry cough is a symptom of cough-variant asthma. This type of asthma is more common in children than adults. It can be difficult to diagnose since a dry cough is also linked to other health conditions. If your cough wakes you up at night, worsens in cold, dry weather or after exposure to allergens, or occurs after exercise, you may have cough-variant asthma.

30% of all individuals with cough-variant asthma eventually develop classic symptoms of asthma. The goal of treatment for cough-variant asthma is to prevent the condition from progressing into a more severe form. Inhaled corticosteroids, which reduce inflammation and swelling in the airways, are the frontline treatment for cough-variant asthma.

All types of asthma can be managed with a combination of asthma medications, healthy lifestyle habits, and additional preventive measures to avoid triggers. However, given the spectrum of severity of symptoms — and the variety of asthma triggers — there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Your doctor will advise you on the most effective treatment plan for your individual needs. 

If you have mild asthma, you may only need quick-relief rescue medications to manage acute symptoms. Albuterol (branded options include ProAir® HFA, Proventil® HFA, Ventolin® HFA) and Levalbuterol (Xopenex HFA®) are common quick-relief asthma medications. They may be taken via inhaler or nebulizer.

If you have moderate to severe asthma, you may need long-term maintenance medication in addition to a rescue medication for flare-ups. There are two main types of long-term asthma control medications:

Inhaled corticosteroids including Flovent® HFA and Qvar Redihaler® 

Combination inhalers that contain both corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists (LABAs) including fluticasone and salmeterol (Advair Diskus®); budesonide and formoterol (Symbicort®); mometasone and formoterol (Dulera®); and fluticasone and vilanterol (Breo Ellipta®)

If you have allergic asthma, your doctor may also recommend over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications such as oral antihistamines (Claritin®, Allegra®, Zyrtec®), decongestants  (Afrin® and Sudafed®), and corticosteroid and cromolyn nasal sprays. While these medications can help you avoid allergy-induced asthma attacks, they are not a substitute for classic asthma medication. If you have nocturnal asthma, your doctor may recommend adjustments to the timing of your dosages to help you experience a better quality of sleep.

For many individuals, the journey of living with type 2 diabetes starts early. Once referred to as adult-onset diabetes due to its prevalence among middle-aged and older Americans, the condition has become more common in children, adolescents, and young adults, due in part to growing childhood obesity rates. While some aspects of type 2 diabetes management, like glucose monitoring and healthy lifestyle choices, are important for all age groups, other parts of treatment may change with time. Here’s a snapshot of what type 2 diabetes may look like at each stage of life and tips for living with the condition.

Managing Type 2 Diabetes at Any Age

All type 2 diabetes treatment plans include healthy eating, frequent physical activity, and blood sugar monitoring regardless of age. Depending on a child or adult’s blood sugar levels and overall health, they may also need diabetes medication or insulin therapy to supplement these lifestyle changes. In addition to insulin, two other diabetes medications may be used to treat type 2 diabetes during childhood: metformin, an oral medication, and liraglutide, an injectable medication.

Younger children will need assistance with blood sugar monitoring, and if your child takes insulin, they will also need help with insulin administration. It’s important that teachers or other school staff are able to provide support during school days. Make sure that someone at the school is prepared to administer glucagon if your child’s blood sugar falls below a healthy range (known as hypoglycemia).

Inform your child’s teacher and/or other school staff of your child’s type 2 diagnosis before classes begin. Be sure to discuss daily treatment needs like blood sugar monitoring, insulin therapy, or other medication needs, as well as how to spot the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has resources that can help you start these conversations.

Living with type 2 diabetes as a young child can be emotionally challenging. It often helps to build connections with other children who are on the same journey. Explore programming for children with type 2 diabetes, like the ADA’s summer camps.

If your child is overweight, their doctor may recommend that you focus on slowing weight gain rather than losing weight since they are still growing. Follow your doctor’s recommendations and look for simple but impactful changes, like swapping carbohydrate-rich foods for a snackable fruit or vegetable, or trading soft drinks and fruit juices for water.

Whether you’ve had type 2 diabetes since childhood or are newly diagnosed, living with the condition as a young adult requires you to take an active role in the management of your health. It’s important to build a relationship with a care team that you trust to avoid any gaps in your treatment. Depending on your treatment plan, you may also have to learn about the logistics of filling prescriptions, ordering diabetes supplies, and coordinating with your insurance company.

Taking on additional responsibilities and navigating life more independently doesn’t mean that you’re completely on your own in managing your diabetes. If parents or another relative previously helped you with blood sugar monitoring, scheduling doctor’s appointments, or other aspects of care, use them as a resource during this transitional period as you become more confident managing your health. You may also want to expand your support system by working with a certified diabetes educator or connecting with other young adults living with type 2 diabetes.

Make sure you understand how other health issues can affect diabetes. For example, the common cold or flu can impact your calorie intake and blood sugar levels, so it’s important to be prepared to manage other illnesses. Alcohol safety is also extra important when living with type 2 diabetes, as alcohol is a factor in your blood sugar levels. For those taking insulin, be mindful of how alcohol use affects insulin therapy.

Build a diabetes care team you trust. In addition to seeing a primary care physician for general health issues, search for an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes treatment.

Familiarize yourself with all aspects of managing type 2 diabetes, from navigating health insurance to monitoring blood sugar. Consider working with a certified diabetes educator. These are healthcare professionals with extensive knowledge of the condition who can offer individualized support. You can also search for a diabetes education program.

Find opportunities to connect with other young adults learning how to manage type 2 diabetes, like the Beyond Type 2 community.

The progression of type 2 diabetes varies significantly by individual. While many individuals are just beginning the journey of living with the condition in their 30s or 40s, diabetes management may feel like second nature for those who were diagnosed at an earlier age. It’s also possible for a person’s treatment needs to evolve at this stage of life. If lifestyle changes and other medications are effective, you may be tapering off of insulin. Conversely, you may need to begin taking additional medications, such as insulin, in order to manage your diabetes even more effectively. As always, follow your care team’s recommendations for your specific needs.

Regardless of what type 2 diabetes looks like for you, one thing’s for certain: it’s important to stay on top of your care and put your health first even when life is at its busiest. Make sure there’s plenty of room in your calendar for physical activity and doctor’s appointments. If you take insulin, find the right delivery method for your schedule and lifestyle. Many people who work long days in a physical setting find insulin pumps and pens convenient as they eliminate the need to remember the timing of injections.

If you are considering starting a family, your doctor can help you plan to have a healthy pregnancy. Get clarity on your A1C targets — your average blood sugar levels over several months — and how long to maintain them before pregnancy. Once you become pregnant, make a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible to learn about any potential changes to your treatment plan.

Revisit your fitness routine, if needed, to find the right activities for your schedule. If you find it challenging to fit enough exercise into your life — ideally 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week — try to fit shorter bursts of physical activity into your day. 

If you take insulin, consult with your doctor about insulin delivery options to find the best fit for your needs.

Preventative care and healthy lifestyle choices take on additional importance when you’re living with diabetes, which increases your risk for other chronic conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and dementia.

Many older adults with diabetes also have high blood pressure, which is linked to a higher risk for strokes and heart attacks as well as vision and kidney function. Stay on top of key numbers like your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and follow your doctor’s recommendations for treatment. You may also want to ask your doctor about additional screenings related to your mental health or cognitive health, as older adults with diabetes are more likely to experience depression or cognitive impairment. Five Black Healthcare Leaders to Celebrate

Dr. M. Jocelyn Elders: the first Black U.S. surgeon general

As a Black woman born to farmers in a rural, poverty-stricken area of Arkansas, M. Jocelyn Elders encountered numerous obstacles on her path to becoming the first Black U.S. Surgeon General in 1993. At 16, she met a doctor for the first time, but she didn't consider a profession in healthcare until she connected with Edith Irby Jones, the first Black person to attend the University of Arkansas Medical School, during college.

Throughout her career, Dr. Elders balanced clinical practice and research, increasing the public’s awareness of adolescent health issues. In 1987, Bill Clinton, then the governor of Arkansas, appointed Dr. Elders as head of the state’s Department of Health. The Arkansas state legislature mandated sexual education and substance misuse prevention programs in the K-12 curriculum in 1989 in large part because of Dr. Elders’ advocacy. During her tenure as Surgeon General, Dr. Elders continued to champion progressive policies, advocating for better sexual education programs, distribution of condoms in schools, and abortion rights. She remains active in the field of public health as a professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine.

Bernard J. Tyson: former CEO of Kaiser Permanente

As chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, Bernard Tyson transformed the company’s services to account for social determinants of health like food access and affordable housing as well as the importance of mental health and wellness. He was also instrumental in the development of the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine, which trains physicians to be not only clinicians, but patient advocates and innovators, too. By shining a spotlight on how social determinants of health contribute to disparities in health outcomes, Tyson leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond Kaiser’s services.

Nadine Burke Harris: first surgeon general of California

A physician, researcher, advocate, and California’s first surgeon general, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris has transformed how our society responds to childhood trauma. While running a health clinic in an underserved San Francisco neighborhood, she observed that preventative health practices and quality treatment didn’t resolve her patients’ risk for poor health outcomes. Drawing upon research from the CDC and Kaiser Permanente on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which linked early adversity to higher rates of chronic illness later in life, Dr. Burke Harris studied her own patients and found that more than 67% had experienced at least one ACE. She has helped increase public awareness of ACEs and toxic stress, advocating for universal screening of children and adolescents for signs of trauma. Her 2014 TED Talk, “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across the Lifetime,” has been viewed more than 7.5 million times, and she published The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity in 2018.

Dr. Patrice Harris: first Black female president of the American Medical Association

Despite not knowing any doctors while growing up in West Virginia, Dr. Patrice Harris’ passion for medicine started early. The board-certified psychiatrist initially planned to pursue pediatrics but shifted her focus after discovering an interest in psychiatry during medical school. Her focus on child psychiatry allows her to merge her passion for children with her expertise in mental health. Throughout her career, Dr. Harris has focused on the role of implicit bias within the medical profession and how unconscious biases among healthcare workers influence health disparities.

Dr. Harris’ involvement in the professional healthcare community spans many leadership positions at state and national organizations. She became the first Black woman elected as president of the American Medical Association in 2020. During her tenure, she focused on a variety of health issues, from opioid addiction to COVID-19. She previously chaired the AMA’s Opioid Task Force, providing evidence-based recommendations to clinicians with the goal of ending the opioid epidemic.

Betty Smith Williams: first Black graduate of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing

Betty Smith Williams was the first Black student to earn a nursing degree from Cleveland’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, in 1954, and the first Black individual to teach at a higher education institution in the state of California, but her individual accomplishments are only a part of her legacy. Williams has helped ensure that today’s aspiring Black healthcare professionals have the opportunities and support to break down barriers of their own. She was instrumental in developing the National Black Nurses Association and the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, Inc. — initiatives that have elevated the voices of Black nurses within the profession. In uniting Black nurses, Williams hoped to create better health outcomes among the Black community. In her own words: "We had no voice, but we understood our culture and our unique needs better than anyone else.”

Skin, the body’s largest organ, protects you against disease and infection and regulates your body temperature, among other crucial functions. It’s important to take good care of this vital and complex organ, as there are a variety of skin problems that can occur, including serious issues like skin cancer. Here’s what to know about the structure of your skin and how you can protect it.

An Introduction to Skin Health

Your skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis (top layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the hypodermis (bottom layer). Each layer has an important purpose.

The epidermis is what you see when you look at your skin. It prevents infections by blocking bacteria and germs from entering your bloodstream. There are three types of cells in the epidermis:

Squamous cells, which form the top layer of the epidermis

Basal cells, which sit beneath the squamous cells

Melanocytes, which produce melanin — the pigment that gives skin its color — and are located at the bottom of the epidermis

Skin cancer first develops in the epidermis, with the three most common types of skin cancer affecting one of the three cells above.

The dermis, the middle layer of skin, plays an important role in your overall skin health. It contains collagen, a protein that keeps skin cells strong and healthy, and blood vessels that deliver nutrients to the epidermis. In addition, its sweat glands help regulate your body temperature, its hair follicles stimulate hair growth, and its nerves allow you to experience the sensation of touch.

The bottom layer of your skin is the fattiest, cushioning your muscles and bones when you fall and protecting you from the cold or extreme heat. The dermis’ nerves and blood vessels continue in the hypodermis, where they expand and reach the rest of your body.

The sun emits a form of electromagnetic radiation called UV radiation that can damage the skin both directly and indirectly. This damage occurs gradually over time, potentially resulting in skin health issues such as:

Freckles, moles, and other benign skin growths

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S. It primarily occurs in parts of your body that receive the most sun exposure, such as your face, neck, hands, and arms, but it may develop anywhere.

Skin cancer can affect anyone, but you may be at a higher risk if you have lighter skin, a family history of skin cancer, prevalent moles, a history of severe sunburns, or a weakened immune system.

There are three common types of skin cancer: basal and squamous cell carcinomas, which develop in the epidermis’ basal and squamous cells, and melanoma, which develops in the melanocytes. Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are very treatable. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer since it can spread to other organs if not detected early.

Limiting your exposure to UV rays is the most important thing you can do to prevent skin cancer and other types of skin damage. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher every day, even if it isn’t sunny, since up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds. Be extra careful around bright surfaces like snow, water, and sand, which can amplify UV exposure and increase your risk of a sunburn.

The strength of the sun’s rays fluctuates throughout each day, and from one day to the next. Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible between 10 am to 4 pm daylight savings time (9 am to 3 pm standard time), when UV radiation is at its strongest.

You are exposed to more UV radiation at higher altitudes, where more UV rays can reach the Earth’s surface. Check the UV Index for a daily forecast of local UV radiation strength on a scale of 0 to 11. Extra precautions against UV rays are recommended when the index is a three or higher. Protective clothing like long-sleeve shirts and wide-brimmed hats can help keep UV rays away from your skin.

It’s also best to avoid tanning beds, which use UV radiation and can increase your risk for skin cancer.

Unlike many other types of cancer, skin cancer is often visible. Checking your skin regularly to identify new or changing skin growths such as moles can help you detect any potential issues early on, when they will be easier to treat.

Skin cancer can take various forms. In general, if you see anything new, changing, or unusual, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible. Here are common signs of skin cancer to watch for, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation:

A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, transparent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored

A mole, birthmark, or brown spot that increases in size, thickness, changes color or texture, or is bigger than a pencil eraser

A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, or bleed

An open sore that does not heal within three weeks

You can also use the first five letters of the alphabet as a tool for recognizing melanoma warning signs in particular:

Asymmetry: Unlike a round or oval mole, melanomas tend to be asymmetrical, with one side of the growth appearing differently from the other. For example, one side may appear darker and raised while the other looks lighter and flat.

Border: The borders of melanomas are uneven, in contrast to the smoother borders of common moles.

Color: Benign moles are often just one shade of brown, but melanomas may have multiple shades of brown, tan, or black. Other colors like red, white, or blue may appear as it grows. Many health experts also consider it to be a melanoma warning sign if a skin growth is darker than others.

Diameter: While it’s best to detect melanoma before it grows, scan for any skin growth the size of a pencil eraser or larger, approximately ¼ inch in diameter.

Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or elevation may be a warning sign of melanoma. Watch for new symptoms like bleeding or itching as well.

Even if you don’t see anything unusual during these scans, it’s important to visit a dermatologist at least once a year for an exam as part of your overall preventative care.

Many medications for respiratory conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are taken by using a metered dose inhaler (MDI), also referred to as a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) inhaler. These handheld devices — one of several types of inhalers used to treat asthma and COPD — are pressurized canisters of aerosol medication in a plastic container with a mouthpiece. They use a chemical propellant to release medication from the canister. 

The Right Way to Use a Metered Dose Inhaler

Many individuals use a plastic tube called a spacer with their metered dose inhaler, which can help ensure that the full dose of medication is received. Spacers may also be used to reduce side effects of corticosteroid inhalers such as mouth and throat irritation. Ask your doctor if a spacer is right for your health needs.

Taking your medication exactly as prescribed is critical to managing symptoms of asthma, COPD, and other lung diseases. If you and your doctor have decided that a metered dose inhaler is a good method of medication delivery for your treatment plan, it’s important to learn about proper use and cleaning of the device. Below, we explain how to use a metered dose inhaler with and without a spacer and share other considerations when using these devices.

The steps below offer a general overview of how to use a metered dose inhaler correctly. Consult with your doctor for more specific instructions. If using your inhaler for the first time, or if it’s been at least two weeks since your last use, be sure to prime your inhaler by spraying several puffs into the air to ensure that it is working.

1. Remove the cap from the inhaler and shake the inhaler for a few seconds. If using a spacer, remove the cap from the spacer and place the inhaler into the open end of the spacer.

2. If you are using your inhaler without a spacer, exhale completely and place the inhaler’s mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips around it. If you are using a spacer, place the spacer’s mouthpiece in your mouth first and then exhale completely.

3. Begin to inhale slowly, pressing down on the canister once.

4. Continue to inhale slowly and deeply for about five seconds.

5. Hold your breath for ten seconds so that the medication can enter your airways.

6. If your doctor has instructed you to take more than one puff of your medication, repeat these steps as needed, waiting about a minute between puffs.

If taking a corticosteroid medication, rinse your mouth with water after each dose to prevent mouth and throat irritation and oral yeast infections. Using a spacer will also minimize the chance of these side effects.

Cleaning your metered dose inhaler and spacer

Most metered dose inhalers can be cleaned by removing the medication canister and rinsing the plastic container under warm running water. If you are unable to remove the canister from the container, wipe the mouthpiece with a cloth or cotton swab. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your inhaler as needed.

To clean your spacer, remove the soft ring at the end and soak both the tube and ring in warm water with light soap. Clean and rinse thoroughly and let the pieces air dry.

Frequency of cleaning depends on how often you take your medication. Consult with your doctor about when to clean your inhaler and spacer.
